Fictionwise Set To Revive The RocketBook

The following is a combination of 2 separate posts by Scott, from Fictionwise:

"We have not made a formal annoucement yet, but it is ok to mention this news on blogs and the like.

"The devices we will be selling are in fact the same devices Gemstar was selling (Reb 1150), but simply relabeled with our brand, Ebookwise-1150. They have been sitting in a warehouse for the past year or so.

"We are selling them, as you suggest, at below market prices. We are in the business of selling content.

"We expect to be selling devices very soon, easily in time for the holiday season

"We are testing this now and will have more news about this in the coming weeks. We plan to offer devices compatible with the 1150, branded with our own name, for $99, which will include a $20 store credit for any content you want. We will also be able to migrate 1150, 1200, and 2150 class Gemstar and RCA devices to take content from a new store we will be launching just for this purpose, and we have agreements with major publishers to provide new content for these devices."

Scott says Fictionwise is re-introducing this platform, and will soon have a new reader available, not just the left over 1150s. He says it is not another dead end, where Gemstar users will find themselves with orphaned devices. Genstar & RocketBook users, stay tuned!

Humans' Ancestral Tree Adds a Twig

OK, Melissa Good fans - check this out:

"On an isolated Indonesian island, scientists have discovered skeletons of a previously unknown human species — tiny, Hobbit-sized figures who lived among dwarf elephants and giant lizards as recently as 12,000 years ago"

I've really been enjoying One Wild Ride (PalmReader version here) but I had no idea....

Fictionwise Audio Books: Frankenstein

"Mary Shelley created the classic story of Victor Baron Frankenstein, who usurps God's prerogatives and creates a man-like creature in his laboratory. When Frankenstein turns his back on his creation, things start to go awry. This dramatization, originally broadcast in 1931, faithfully follows Shelley's original story, unlike most of the movies that have been based on the story. "

As part of its Halloween promotion, Fictionwise is offering the first book in this 13 book audio series for free. Each original broadcast was about 12 minutes long. Each audio book costs 69¢

Sierra Leone: Lesbian Rights Activist Brutally Murdered

"Eddy, 30, was found dead on the morning of September 29. While she was working alone in the Sierra Leone Lesbian and Gay Association’s offices the previous night, her assailant or assailants apparently broke in to the premises. She was raped repeatedly, stabbed and her neck was broken.

"...Eddy had founded the Sierra Leone Lesbian and Gay Association in 2002. The group provided social and psychological support to a fearful and underground community. Eddy herself, however, was a visible and courageous figure, lobbying government ministers to address the health and human rights needs of men who have sex with men and women who have sex with women.

"In April, Eddy was part of a delegation of sexual-rights activists whom Human Rights Watch and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) helped attend the annual session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. Eddy met with her own government’s delegation, and testified to the Commission about lesbian and gay rights in what she called “my beloved Sierra Leone.”

“ 'We face constant harassment and violence from neighbors and others,' she told the U.N. Commission on Human Rights. 'Their homophobic attacks go unpunished by authorities, further encouraging their discriminatory and violent treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.' ”

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission reports on a campaign to raise money for her partner and 9 year old son:

"In the meantime, Behind the Mask is collecting donations to support Fannyann's son and the Sierra Leone Lesbian and Gay Association. Details may be obtained by writing to Daniel@mask.org.za"
